I'm confused - I thought the Symposium was a popularity vote, not an
award of some sort. If DUSKY CHALLENGER remains number one forever,
doesn't that mean it is the most popular iris grown by those who vote?
Isn't that the point of a popularity poll? Why would AIS want to
publish a list of 100 irises less popular than the most popular ones,
regardless of their age?
Someone mentioned excluding Dykes medal winners - but I'd add that not
all Dykes medal winners are popular, mostly because some don't all grow
well (at all) everywhere, but some are actively disliked. I'd expect
the "popularity" of a Dykes medal winner would be different from a vote
tally for the top AIS award.
I'm not surprised that there aren't many 90s irises in the top 100 yet -
too expensive to have been widely distributed long enough to decide they
are really favorites. Maybe?
On the other hand, I guess somebody already decided to eliminate one of
the most popular irises of all time, I. pallida, plus there are probably
several very popular older historics that aren't on the list, so maybe
your interpretation is closer to the intent (i.e., most popular
introductions of recent decades).

<To me, the simplest thing would be to retire a cultivar to the Hall of
Fame after ten years in the top 100. If we don't change, somewhere
down the road there won't be any room for new additions as it seems some
cultivars like DUSKY CHALLENGER. STEPPING OUT, VANITY would be in the
symposium forever.Of the top ten on the 2001 Symposium, STAIRWAY TO
HEAVEN is the only iris from the 1990s that is listed.>
