To clarify, my understanding is that we are voting in an effort to produce a
list of our favorite irises and to rake those irises in order of popularity.
Someone/group has limited the choices we may make to irises they felt should
be popular and deleted from the list irises unbecoming to their taste/other
criterion.
For the results to have validity, the poll designers (list makers in this
case) must endeavor to avoid influence of the choices the respondents make.
Hence my reasoning that 5 or 10 write-in choices with all irises in the
checklist being legitimate candidates for consideration.
As the "Symposium" is being conducted now, all we are producing is a ranking
of someone else's choices, not making choices. If this be the objective this
discussion becomes moot.
Sometime ago I reluctantly accepted as fact there would sometimes be smarter
men. I have yet to accept as fact someone else knows which irises I like
best.
