RE: CULT: Misnamed iris?

Hi Kelly,

The following is from the book "Bulbs and Tubers" by Klaas Noordhuis and
Sam Benvie p. 64
"Dutch crosses between I. xiphium (the Spanish Iris), I. tingitana, and
others are called Dutch irises (Iris x hollandica). These irises are
specially treated under glass by growers as cut flowers. They are sensitive
to both frost and wind and are therefore unsuitable for the garden. They can
be grown well in the cut-flower patch in full sun. Stake them well: in good
soil, they grow up to 32 in (80 cm) high. Plant them in fall 3 in (8cm) deep
in well-drained soil (to prevent frost damage), and cover them.
Unfortunately, they are nearly always supplied in mixed packs for the
garden."

They grow from a bulb, not a rhizome.
