LOL, Laurie! I decided that I was going to place a flower in my bed by the
name of each of my children, hubby, me, and it went on to include whole
family! You can find almost any name but Alexis in the daylily field. I can
find Alexis in the iris field but few of the others. Alexis, by the way is a
pink iris and just as pretty as my llittle grandaughter! I actually
contacted two daylily hybridizers about registering one by that name. The
first said flat "NO" and even commented that I wouldn't get that done by any
other true hybrdizer either. He says that the name should have some
connection to the iris being named. I went on to ask the next hybridzer of
my choice and he is perfectly willing to let me purchase a seedling and name
it, just have to acknowledge him as the hybridizer. Not a bad deal in my
oppinion. Both were well recognized in their field and have wonderful
gardens and lovely catalogs. Just a difference in oppinions...I respect
both.
When a member of the family visits, they always tour the garden and look
for the one wiht their name and feel special to know I think of them while
in my garden.
I think being human we are going to have our preferences for things;
anything, wheather it be color, growing habit, name, hybridizer, growth
height, zone preference, bloom shape, size, and the list goes on.... like
ice cream, choc, van, cherry, peach, or cone, cup, bowl, with or with out
toppings...
Many of us have a various assortment of iris in our gardens because we
change our minds or because our interests cover a wider range than the
average home gardener :-) Thanks for listening to my two cents worth on
names!
