Any time you're talking species-x, you're going to have some problems with
either fertility or compatibility when you try to introduce new bloodlines
to the mix. The long (but easier) way around the problem is to develop
bridge plants (something compatible with both lines) then cross the progeny.

Not at all. If you check the parentage of a number of TBs you'll find an AB
or two lurking in the background.

Timing. Seedlings started too late in the season in some areas simply won't
be able to handle the rigors of winter. Better to give them a full season
even if germination is more work in the spring.

Can't speak for anyone else, but I chose test gardens on the basis of
climate and the willingness of the gardener to keep track of plant behavior
and report back to me, *and* to destroy the seedlings if I decide they
aren't worth the garden space (though I've usually gotten past that point by
the time anything leaves for testing).
