Finally, after years of threats to cut back, it is finally happening
in MS. This state has MCES (Mississippi Co-operative Extension
Service) and MAFES (Mississipp Agricultural and Forestry
Experiment Station), both headquartered on the campus of MSU
where I worked for a number of years.. I can not begin to relate the
endless duplicity and waste of taxpayers' money with these two
mega offices.
I have no faith in the Extension service and its satellite offices.

I too have no faith in this service. Awhile back there was a discussion
about Terraclor for rot. So, I did some computer research and found
contradictory information. I called my Local ES office for clarification.
The Master Gardener that called back read me the same information from the
same site I had already found and suggested another product that I have not
seen mentioned in any Iris information. Any attempts to discuss further was
futile, to say the least. In the course of the conversation, she suggested
that I call another county that has an actual horticulturalist on staff.
Seems our horticulturalist was one of the forced retirees and his position
was not being filled. It is a sad state of affairs when a new gardener is
left with the impression that they know more that the "expert" simply
because they have put in one 14 x 4 perennial flower bed in sub-soil clay
and read a couple of gardening books.
