An Iris Story... or How I started Hybridizing
Once upon a time, I decided it would be neat to have a theme iris bed. The
theme was anything Star Wars or Star Trek related. Visions of MILLENIUM
FALCON, PRINCESS LEIA, and DARK VADER danced thru my head.
And of course I did just happen to mention this to my local iris brethren. One
bold individual (and occassional member of this list) told me he had just the
perfect cultivar for my project. He would check his clump and if he could cut
a piece, he would bring it to me at an upcoming event.
The big day came and he pulls me aside and gives me an absolutely gorgeous
hunk of iris rhizome. Written clearly in magic marker was JAR JAR BINKS (tb)
on one leaf. To say that I was impressed was an understatement. All the way
up until he smiled and informed me that I would just have to hybridize one
for this name myself, cause he just made it up!
I am still working on it!
