Hi John and Walter,

I am with you on this one. Best Specimen of Show sounds rather cold and
clinical to me as well. I would prefer Queen of Show, though I suppose
that it is not politically correct. The official trophy of the "Best
Specimen of Show" for our annual iris show here in Lincoln Nebraska
actually has "Queen of Show" engraved on the base plate. That trophy
dates from 1982 when the term "Queen of Show" was still ok with AIS.
And, there is no plan to change our trophy.

If the term "Queen of Show" is unacceptable, then perhaps a term that
might be better than "Best Specimen of Show" would be simply "Best Of
Show". Why do we need the word Specimen in there? In lots of other
competitions such as dog shows, etc, they call the overall winner the
"Best of Show". The word specimen is what makes the term very clinical
for me. I immediately think of a laboratory, and then on to something
like a urine specimen. Maybe I have just been around hospitals too
long. Sorry! ;-)

Desperately needing RAIN! Only total of 1" of rain here in the past 8
weeks.

P.S. The local Rose Society show features both a Queen of the Show and
a King of the Show. So, which is better, and are those terms condoned
by the American Rose Society?? I'm not a rosarian, so don't know
that answer.
