Neil, I really need to send you some of my tough kids to try. Others
have commented that IBs do generally hold up better than most TBs in our
climate. But like you, they are not my first love.
Several years ago, Ellen G sent me a huge box of newly purchased IBs,
SDBs, & MTBs to babysit for her while she was in transition to a new
house/garden. As with the TBs, there were some that did well, some that
died, and some in between. As "payment", I kept starts from those that
did well & will dig out and post a list of those, if anyone is
interested. They have continued to do well. (thanks again, Ellen - that
was a brave thing to do, sending them south to the vale of despair,
weeding out the weaklings for sure!).
SDBs have not been as good here - they just don't have the root system
to handle our summers in my gravelly soil. Same for MTBs and the few
aphyllas I've tried.
Raining again today (!), but I will try to get out and take some notes
on newish things that have <not> come down with much foliar soft rot.
Rarely see rhizome and outer leaf rot any more. Lots of crushed
dolomitic limestone & high phosphorus fertilizer seems to help. I don't
have problems with saturated soil from constant rainfall that you do in
your soil (my gravel vs your clay), but maybe those that do really well
here might do ok for you as well.
Happy July 4th!
< I am appalled at the rot losses among TB's. Stalk rot, pod rot and
outer foliage rotting off from rhizomes have plagued us here in the past
two years. It is tempting either to move away from here or to give up
my first love in irises.
Oddly, the SDB's and IB's do better. I find that curious. I would have
expected their behavior to be similar to TB's. Not so..... Neil
