Linda, I don't use it as mulch, I dig it into the beds as compost. When I
mulch the beds I use pine needles. I have two huge Japanese Black Pines that
supply me with all the mulch I can use.

How thick a layer of the composted mulch do you use?
With all the rain we've been getting this month, I've been raking up a
lot of grass clippings for the first time ever and have been using them
as mulch here and there, but hadn't thought of putting them around the
iris. I used to use rotting hay mulch around veggies and certainly have
plenty of dusty old hay that needs to come out of the barn that I could
ferment and use.
I've been digging for our upcoming sale Saturday and all the rain has
resulted in some Oregon sized rhizomes here. Sweet tater rhizomes! So
I'm sure some mulch would help reduce moisture stress in a normal year
and might help with pod set and pollen production during dry spells in
bloom season.
