Neil & Chuck, the problem Betty and I are both struggling with is not
the chemistry of it all, but how to calculate the probabilities. While
the synthesis pathways are interesting, they don't help me with the
calculations. Maybe they "should" but they don't.
Anybody know of good <simple> genetics websites that explain this stuff
in a way that wouldn't be hard to translate to our irises? Probably not
the time of year to be trying to do this, except that I'm still ordering
a few things.
She and I are both trying to "create" some TB pinks that are suit us
better (i.e., tall, better branching & bud count, thrive in our somewhat
similar but still different climates) than the ones that are already
available.
Betty wants rebloom, I want super health, but we both have the same
problem - nothing good enough in the existing pink lines to start from.
But both of us have several potential starting points in our seedlings.
I don't want suggestions of what to cross with what, but really would
like to be able to have an educated guess at the probabilities for the
choices I do make. When I get more pods than I can handle, like this
year and last, it would help me prioritize what to plant.
For my purposes, I guess 1/4 and 1/6 are close enough for me to consider
them the same (given germination rates and seedling survival rates
here), but I would still like to understand how the math works.
And how to combine it with the math of the other factors (yellow
pigments, anthocyanins with & without inhibitors etc).
Not sure I'm capable of such things any more....
