Well, duh, I think...
I've been wading thru TWOI again, and it seems that the reason it's 1/6
is complicated (allotetraploidy and all that stuff), but we "know" it's
1/6 because of all the crosses hybridizers have done to find out what
the probability is. So all we have to do is look at the table, not
figure anything out at all.
".....almost all actual values will be somewhere between the maximum and
the minimum [in the table on p. 395]. Because most tall bearded irises
are complex, chromosome pairings may differ between even full sibs and
an exact value, even if known for one...would not necessarily be valid
for another..."
So if we have blue I & i or W & w, if we can figure out from the table
and what we know about the pedigree and babies we've grown, then
(according to page 396), we can multiply the probabilities to get some
idea of results. Or range of probabilities.
Apologies for being so dense, especially if we've had this same
discussion already and I've forgotten it....
I slept last night for the first time with a cpap machine and my brain
seems to work again! Amazing.
