I am not aware that the water is salty. I did use plant food a couple of 
times over the season, but certainly not excessively. Your explanation makes a lot 
of sense. The plants seem pretty healthy except for this. 

I confess I am beginning to wonder about what this heat is going to do to the 
plants. This is my first year with irises. It is customary here to have hot 
summers, but this has been a hotter than normal year (ten miles inland from 
here they say the heat index might go over 110). I know, though, that so many 
people post here from climates much hotter than mine, and irises survive in those 
places. I haven't mulched, but I probably should.
