Re: Re: TB: Brown Tips on Leaves?

I'm in central NM, and we've had triple digit weather (or at least close)
for over a month now, and it was pretty warm before that. So far I don't
think it's been over 105 F. Here the air is always dry (meaning below 30
% humidity at night and below 20% in day - often below 5%), it rarely
rains, the sun is out all day nearly every day, the elevation is high so
UV is high, and indeed the Iris have brown tips (at least). Many die back
almost to the ground in summer if they are in full sun. However, most of
the bearded, spuria and a few other Iris types do great. The brown tips
are no sign of anything worse than a period of summer dormancy. When it
cools off in a month or two, they will start to grow again, and that is
when most of the increases will appear (they really started right around
or after bloom, but are often not visible above ground till after the
summer heat). So, for most of them, the "heat and dry" of the northeast
US this summer should be a walk in the park. You may find that you even
have increased bloom on some of them next year (emphasizing the "might"
there).

I wonder how the Irises are fairing southwest and west of here, where many
places have been over 110F for day after day after day recently?

Dave
