Re: Adm AIS Membership Survey

It is true that the membership of AIS is very diverse. But like a mother with many children, she does not necessarily love any one less. Sometimes we have zero sum games where doing one thing precludes another. But there are also win win situations where everyone can enjoy a benefit and other times where one area can be improved without affecting others negatively. Until AIS can really understand the wants and needs of its members, it is impossible to say what changes can be made that would benefit everyone or only a few.

Until I file a final report I would rather not discuss details, but certainly so far there are some things emerging that it would seem that everyone agrees with and others that are more ambiguous. I believe there have been times in the past where the board has been unsure and reluctant to change. Understanding what the membership thinks might well help to move certain things forward.

The loss of membership during the last 10 years is a problem that needs addressing. If the membership survey can help turn this around than I think all of us will benefit. The diversity of the membership may actually provide the strength to adapt to the change in the society around us and allow many of us to continue having much of what we like about the society.

Mine was one of the surveys returned at the convention. If I were to answer
now, after time to think about several questions, my response might be
different on a few.

Yesterday, our club had it's annual rhizome sale. At this time, our
president handed out copies of the survey to members that were present. However,
many members were not in attendance, and some will not be at our picnic, next
month.

As I read back over the list of 33 questions, there are several I don't
remember seeing in May. It doesn't mean they weren't there, just that they were
unimportant to my personal needs.

The AIS membership is extremely diverse. Some people grow irises for their
own gardening pleasure, others grow to show, while still others devote their
time to improving the various types and classes. More than anything, I
believe this survey will reflect that diversity.

How will the needs of one group be weighed against the needs of the other
groups?
