Re: Re: CULT: iris health

Connie -- Having gone through late winter and spring at Fort Leonard Wood, I well remember the conditions in that rocky soil. Here, in northern Virginia, even in the plastic world of the Washington area, we can get two types of topsoil by the truckload: The first is simply scraped off the surface of land being taken for development, run through a screening process to get rid of most of the green growth, and you take your chances. The second is referred to as topsoil mix, and is usually a mix of topsoil, sand and leaf mold. Some places also use well-rotted horse manure, though the supply of that commodity is diminishing along with expanding development. In this area, the topsoil mix costs $20 a cubic yard. Maybe you can find topsoil mix in your area? And at less cost? -- Griff

at least in my gravelly soil,

I am along the Lake of the Ozarks.......very rocky....only soil is what is
hauled in & it is very poor quality. After all I lost with the freeze this year, I do not have much to lose. I did not plan to have it touch the iris leaves themselves. I think I will try it because due to health reasons, the
weeding is not something I can do anymore.
