John -- I think it was someone else who sent the message to which you're responding, since I haven't chimed in on this subject yet. Nonetheless, I agree with your opinion about the maiden bloom. Particularly disappointing, though, are those anomalies that are spectacular when they first bloom, but don't repeat that performance, or do so only sporadically, in subsequent years. I've had a couple of these.
One thing I never do, by the way, is plant anemonies near my anomalies. I tend to get them all mixed up -- not when looking at them, but when talking about them, particularly when I'm preparing the containers for the shows. -- Griff

Griff,I would say it is a maiden bloom even if you did not get to see the flower. The point is that the first year rhizome hasn't had the time to truly realize its full strength. Maiden bloom on a lot of cultivars tends to be shorter, with smaller flowers, and perhaps not fully color developed. Branching may be less etc.The fact that a bloom was frozen back, washed away, blown off or whatever does not change the time factor on the developing rhizomes.IMO John On Jul 24, 2007, at 8:57 AM, Linda Smith wrote:Hi Betty,Maybe the party Griff is giving to get his bottles for next year might be agood idea at this point. HA!!!!!!!I don't have a clue as to what you are really talking about. But to me the maiden bloom is the first bloom it actually blooms. But I'm not a hybridizerA virgin is a virgin until she is de-flowered no matter how close she came.(Since we are talking about maidens) Linda in CW AZ -------Original Message------- From: Autmirislvr@aol.com Date: 07/24/07 08:05:19 To: iris@hort.net Subject: [iris]HYB:Maiden bloom:Anomalies Hi Gang,I tend to get way too excited over maiden bloom. This has probably beenthe most embarrassing part of my iris experience! <vbg> In addition, there are times when I just don't pay enough attention! Many of us saw all maiden bloom for 2007 totally wiped out. This has neverhappened to me before. When these irises bloom, either this fall on next spring, will the bloomstill be maiden bloom? In regard to the anomalies in bloom? My thought isthat these irises tried to bloom, and even though we didn't "see" them, the maiden bloom anomaly factor is gone?If true, would this apply to only the seedlings that tried to bloom? These are the types of things I don't write down. My note taking is much betterinoff seasons when things are not complicated by bloom and hybridizing dutiesI've no memory of marked anomalies in 2nd year bloom clumps. (Ones thatdidn't bloom the first year) What say ya'll? ________________________________________________________Betty W. in South-central KY Zone 6 ---If you don't cross them, you can'tplant them!
