Mary Lou, try cutting through the old or mother rhizome with a knife.
Sometimes I will take out about a quarter inch slice. I do this early in the
season when I want to move only a portion of a clump, but it should also work to
slow down the spread of rot. My paring knife is one of my most valued garden
tools.
