A few years back when I was digging and dividing iris at the usual time
here (late July-early August) I gave a bunch to a neighbor. I assumed he
would go ahead and plant them just as I was replanting mine, but aparently
he didn't take the hint and put them in his shed and left them there until
the next Spring when he finally got around to planting them. They all (or
nearly all) survived and the following year he had a fine stand of iris in
bloom. The moral of the tale is that TB rhizomes can survive for an
amazingly long period out of the ground as long as they are kept dry so
they don't rot.
