Ian:
You asked about my I. variegata -- I stumbled across a picture of it
recently in living color at this site:
http://bunchofbloomers.com/iris.shtml
Presuming you got there, my old reliable is the same as the photo on the
right. (I have no idea what the other two pictured iris might be -- do
you?) This corresponds with #1 on your list I believe, tho I usually
describe the color as "buttery yellow & cinnamon brown" rather than
yellow & brick red.
These irises were growing all over our mtn property when we bought it in
1980 & I've divided & moved it many times. My best guess it that it was
planted here circa 1948 by the previous owners of what was, in those
days, a summer cabin -- they came up from Denver a lot at first but had
hardly visited the place in many, many years when we bought it from
them.
Now can you or someone clear up some confusion for me? I've been
assuming for a couple of months since folks at Iris-L helped me identify
this iris that I. variegata is a species plant & that ALL that bear the
name & ID would bloom the same colors. Not so?
