Re: Ian's question re I. variegata

Re your http://bunchofbloomers.com/iris.shtml - I believe the s should
be deleted from the last phrase. I got there using the information up
to com.

The other flower looks like variegata but taken with poor photography.
It is unclear whether it is one photo or two but if one, the flower on
the right appears to be in bright sunlight and the other one in shade.

Your assumption that all plants bearing the same id will flower the same
is incorrect. If you propogate by rhizomes they will, with one or two
rare exceptions, but if they propogate by seed then you are open to
quite a bit of variation.

In the case of my variegata, the simple differences between the
varieties suggest that they have a simple genetic explanation. The
white varieties are similar to albino children in our own population.
Probably one gene determines the production of a single chemical for the
yellow and when it is absent, white flowers rather than yellow. The
other variation is equally simple. If you have a very large number of
variegata on your property, I am sure that careful examination of the
flowers will result in you finding quite distinct differences.
