How about building a small lath house over the bed - maybe a foot off
the ground - sturdy enough to let the carpenter tramp away without
breaking thru it and airy enough to allow good circulation. The foliage
might wind up bent, but not smashed, and at least the soil wouldn't be
compacted and the rhizomes not stomped.
