HYB: Cross-over

Linda Mann asked:

: Does that happen frequently? =

Define "frequently". It happens often enough to be a useful tool in gene=

mapping. The further apart two genes are on a chromosome, the more often=

they are on parts that are swapped by a cross-over.

: Are there some kinds of crosses
: (mismatched chromosome pairs maybe?? one parent with damaged chromosom=
es
: and mostly sterile?) that increase the probability of this happening?

This is something that normally happens with matched chromosomes. I
remember some of the early reports of counts of C.G. White's arilbreds in=

which a crossover was suspected involving mis-matched chromosomes, but I
don't think this happens very often.
