Hi, Rusty. If your irises don't mind the long bleach soak, don't change
your ways; but for sanitary purposes, a much shorter soak is sufficient.
People who simply dunk the rhizomes into solution and yank them out again
are merely defatting the rhizome surfaces, and that doesn't kill enough
microorganisms to help. But 20 minutes of immersion will do in fungi and
viruses; one hour surely is enough.
We don't need to sterilize these plants obsessively. They're plants. They
live in dirt. :-)
