Jules wondered about how long it would take living without irises for
them to be gone. Seems like we had some speculation about that last
year (including bat boxes for moth control) but what we weren't sure
about was if it was obligated to live on irises or if there might be an
alternate host plant. If it has to have irises, and if it finishes its
life cycle in one year and if the adult moths don't fly in from some
faraway wild irises or other gardens, then one year ought to do it.
Seems like.
What I wonder is why they aren't a widespread problem in the south. Do
we have more predators? Or soil critters that eat them during that
phase? They probably mildew and die.
