Although I have zero experience with this, I will take a stab at it.
Julie Allen sells potted iris during bloom season. Our temps may not
get as cold in the winter, but we don't have snow cover to protect
plants. Julie buries her pots in sawdust (to give the copperheads a
place to lay their eggs <a wee joke>). The idea is to insulate the
pots, not to cover the plants. They don't all bloom, but enough do to
lure the tourists. There may be more in the archives - seems like we
talked about this last year some. Or maybe Julie will take a break from
processing veggies and say more.

Julie is near Crossville, sort of middle Tennessee, a zone colder than
here and with more uniform summer rain.
The Japanese beetles ate my Perfume Counter flowers! Shoulda cut it and
brought it indoors!
