Hi all--
Since today is the official end of the California rain-measuring year
and I've just finished up our weather data for the year, I thought I'd
share some of it with you. If you're not interested, no need to read
further. Could be lengthy and/or boring to some......
Here is what El Nino brought to Cathey's Valley, located in Mariposa
County (home of Yosemite National Park), in the lower Sierra Nevada
foothills of Central California at 1,250' elevation:
All temperature and rainfall stats are for the 8 years that we've lived
here. Rainfall normal of 20" is an official weather bureau figure for
100+ years
RAINFALL
**remember CA measures rainfall from July 1 to June 30
we had 35.81" (20" is normal)--so we had 179% of normal--our WETTEST
year since we moved here 8 years ago
TEMPERATURES
El Nino didn't really "kick in" here until mid-to-late December
DECEMBER--2nd coolest high temps
JANUARY--warmest high temps
FEBRUARY--most rain and coolest high temps
MARCH--second most rain and coolest high temps
APRIL--most rain and coolest high temps and coldest low temps
MAY--most rain and coolest high temps and coldest low temps
JUNE--most rain and second coolest high temps and second coldest low
temps (note--we had as much rain this June as in the 5 previous Junes
combined!!)
RAINY DAYS (measurable precipitation) during our normal open garden
dates of April 1 to May 15--has averaged 6 days--this year we had
measurable precip on 16 days--almost triple the average!!
But despite all these weather extremes, the worst effect was on the
PEOPLE who live here (US)--the iris came through just as beautifully as
ever--the bloom season was our longest ever, but was a week to two weeks
later than normal!
Not so for the people (US)--who are hoping for a drought next year or
what they're calling La Nina!
Roger (not Rick)--I'm the stat freak!
Superstition Iris Gardens
Central California Sierra Nevada foothills--Zone 8--where digging for
week #2 of order filling starts tomorrow evening!
