Hi all,
I've been enjoying reading Marte's bloom reports. Makes spring feel that
much closer. There are daffodils and viburnum blooming in Bendigo (30km
north of here), and mine should only be 4 weeks off, closely followed by
DI's. I keep checking the I.Japonica's for signs of bloom stalks. They
have fared well during the heavy frosts, in their safe little place
under the Alnus tree. I can't help thinking everything will be early
because of the sunny weather we've been having.
I shall be a regular visitor to the Bendigo Macdonalds store in early
spring. An odd thing to say on iris-talk, but they have landscaped their
large car park with irises of various types - TB's, LA's, SDB's and
Spurias. Also Dietes. All set against a lavender and westringia hedge.
You can sit and look at the irises and not notice that what you're
eating tastes like &*%^.
It's extremely dry here, and the catchments are well below their normal
level for this time of year. It keeps looking like rain but doing
nothing. We will be in trouble if we don't get a good spring rainfall.
I'm seriously thinking about watering today, especially the LA's.
Meanwhile I have plenty of dry, sunny days to tidy up my winter garden
and plan for spring.
Cheers, Jan Clark, in Australia
