CULT: Borer is a four letter word!!

From: <JEM300@aol.com>

Hi friends,

I was just out checkin' out the fans looking for increase and such. All of a
sudden I look at the base of this fan and it's all chewed up and brown and
mushy. There's some disgusting ooze coming out.......Yes! A borer has taken
up residence!

Well, I march into the garage, grab my gear and head out to the fields looking
like
Bill Murray in Caddyshack. I dig up the rhizome and that darling little pink
headed borer looks up at me so wonderingly...........then I bash his little
brains in!!! I checked every single fan in the garden and found 3 with borer
damage. I dug them out and sealed them in a big Ziplock bag then put this
into a bigger plastic bag that
I knotted shut and tossed them into the trash can.

I had sprayed this year with Cygon for the first time but apparently following
the label instructions is no good. I found out later from friends that you
need to add some kind of "stickum". I guess some liquid detergent added to
the formula makes it stick to the irises better and kills the borer eggs
better. Next year I'm adding "stickum" for sure.

Anyway, the only defense I believe I can use at this time of year is what I
just did.
Close inspection is not too difficult for me as I don't have any crowded
clumps of iris. They sure make themselves obvious on the ones they decided to
munch on.
Apparently, now is the time to look since the ones I found had just gotten
into the
rhizomes. Do they lay their eggs before they bore into the rz?

I'm just so grossed out I don't even want to eat dinner. I'll be dreaming of
those borers eating their way out of all that plastic and finding their way
back to the iris smorgasbord..........What a nightmare!!
