Hi
I feel the urge to emerge from shadowy lurkdom and add my opinion to the
melting pot:
1. the decision to revive iris-L rests with Tom and Tom alone. However, I am
sure that Tom would appreciate constructive discussion on this list.
2. I do not think that there is currently space for two lists unless one or
other takes a definite area to be concerned with. Judging by comment on the
list this week, and also around the time that sibrob started (which runs quite
successfully thanks to Ellen and the sibrobbers), my opinion is that if both
lists were to run, it would be sensible to have one list for bearded irises,
and the other for beardless. There are many people who feel that iris-L was
dominated by bearded growers - this was one of the main reasons for the
formation of sibrob. This is not a criticism - Iris-L, like AIS, merely
reflects the preferences of its members. Nor do I mean this suggestion to be
divisive, merely practical. There are many of us (myself included) who love
both bearded and beardless irises, but there are those who, for whatever
reason (climate, soil, personal preference, inexperience) grow only plants
from one section or the other, and may be better served by discrete lists.
3. It is also my opinion that one all-encompassing list will serve us better
by broadening our education and knowledge of ALL sections of the genus (as
well as other Irids). I have learnt stacks since I first joined Iris-L back in
November 1996 - and as a professional grower of Iris since 1988, I appreciate
that new knowledge.
4. Bloom reports are useful to many new growers, and also those of us who are
looking out for new varieties to grow. You can always use delete.
5. Do not attempt to "dumb-down" the list by moving the more technical posts
away to a second list. That would dramatically reduce the value of the list to
its members.
6. Do not allow "list war" to break out. There were one or two mutterings of
disquiet when sibrob began. I hope we are all mature enough to not let those
ridiculous sentiments re-emerge. I know for sure that Tom and John would
thoroughly disapprove of that sort of thing, and would be desperate to avoid
it.
OK - I've said my piece and will put the soap-box away for now. Whatever
occurs, Tom and John have my support as an iris list old-hander. They have
both done a good job under circumstances that have not always been easy.
