spp. of per. herbs with short rhizomes, native to Australia and trop. Amer.;
closely allied toSisprinchium, but having filaments separate or nearly so, and
young caps. partly enclosed by the spathe valves.
chimboracensis (HBK) Bak. Sts. 1'4-3 ft.; lvs. basal, 2-ranked, grasslike,
12-15 in. Iong, mostly 1/4 - 1/2 in. wide, margins scabrid-pubescent; infl.
racemose, overtopping Ivs., with 2 - 3 fls. in clusters, each cluster
subtended by a spathelike bract or reduced lf., spathes surrounding each fl. 2
ovate-lanceolate, margins broadly scarious; fls. Iight violetblue, rotate,
about 1 1/2 in. across, perianth seams. nearly equal, anthers yellow, style
brs. purple, horizontal to reflexed; caps. to 5/8 in. Iong. Temp. highlands,
Mex. to Bolivia and Peru.
