Hi all,
I haven't posted anything in a while, so some of you may not know me (in
fact, most of you won't) -- I'm the guy who does the list archiving
at mallorn.com. I wanted to make a statement about the archives in
response to some personal mail that I've received and address some
points in John's message referenced above.
First off, I'm going to continue running the archives for as long
as possible. That means until
a) I go bankrupt and can't afford to run them anymore
b) I get run over by a truck and nobody else here wants to keep
supporting them
I don't see either of these happening any time soon (I HOPE! :),
so I'll stick with the list in whatever form it takes, whereever
it happens to go.
I did feel compelled to respond to John's post about the benefits
of Onelist over the old iris-l list. What I'm saying isn't intended
to downplay Onelist's achievements or point out rt66's faults... I'm
just stating some facts... Whew. Now that I've protected my rear...
Anyhow, the points that John brought up about mailing list
management are quite valid. However, it should be noted that any
*properly* configured list server should also deal with the
issues of
o user privacy
o protecting the list from spam
o bounced mail going to the listowner
o unwanted subscriptions (adding someone else unwillingly)
o filtering mail based on keywords (bad words, "unsubscribe")
So what's my point? If the list does migrate elsewhere, don't
settle for anything less. These features are all possible, but
many list managers just don't want to put in the time to
do things right. Sometimes they just don't know how either --
send them my way if that's the case, and I'll be glad to help
educate...
Happy irising,
Chris
P.S. If there are any features that you would like to see added/changed
in the archives, please don't hesitate to ask me. I've already
received a wish list from John, so his suggestions are in the
works. But they're not easy ones to implement -- thanks John!
Don't want me becoming idle! :)
P.P.S. Adding a metoo://username@dom.ain will break mail addresses
in the archives. Adding
<a href="u*@dom.ain">username@dom.ain</a>
works just fine. I think mailto:// is specific to certain
mailers, and not part of the standards.
