Re: Arils, arilbreds and aril-pums

From: Francesca R Thoolen <IRISGIRL@compuserve.com>

Dennis: ANACRUSIS is fits in the arilmed classification; it is also an
arilbred in that its karyotype is AABB or 2/4, i.e. of 4 parts genes 2 of
them are arils usually resulting in a fertile hybrid. Arilpums are also
arilbreds with a karyotype of AAPP, i.e., of the 4 parts, 2 of them are
arils usually resulting in a fertile hybrid. However the non aril parts are
very different. The first group fall in the category similar, in gene
structure, to that of the C.G. White type of arilbreds except that the I.
mellita genes have influenced the height. One could cross Anacrusis with
the C.G.White type of arilbreds and obtain fertility. With the arilpums one
is usually limited to crossing tetraploid arils with pumilas. There are a
very few exceptions but since the plants are not that readily available
there is no point of discussing them. -FRT.
