Re: LA\spec-x Andrew Wheeler

I think that the 'wider' the cross, the more problems that will arise. (The
more dissimilar the parents, the worse the child.)
If the cross with TB's were possible, My theory is that the plant would not
grow well at all. I cite as an example 'Paltec' a cross of Iris Pallida (a
species from which the present tall bearded were bread) and Iris tectorum,
a crested iris (evansia). Paltec, at least around here, seems incredibly
rot-prone. Poor foliage habit is common of several interspecies crosses
that I grow. Some of the first sibtosas (Iris siberica x I. Setosa) have
bad foliage habit, it seems that more recent sibtosas have better foliage
habit. Possibly hybridizers realized that they are prone to early die-back
and selected the better ones. Both I setosa and I siberica and their
same-species hybrids are not prone to the early die back of some of their
interspecific progeny. There was some talk of SIx JI crosses awhile back
on "the L", But I don't believe we ever encountered anyone who could say
they were sure they had or had seen one. Iris Pseudacorus will pollinate
many many things, that LA cross might be possible and since the cultural
requirements are more similar, the plant may potentially be a better
survivor.
Sorry if that was a bit scattered.
