Hello,
The Japanese iris season is slowing down here and the lilium, daylilies,
phlox, hosta and their 'friends' are taking over the colorful show.
Six stand-outs JIs this season:
BELLENDER BLUE (Bauer/Coble 1993) (2 clumps) - this is the first time I
have seen it after planting them three years ago but it was worth the
wait. Every time I think it is finished three or four flowers appear on
each clump. BIG, beautiful blue flowers. It is a single (3 falls) AND
very tall and impressive. It is registered at 50" although my tallest
bloomstalk was 48" with several being 45". I had to stake a few because
of our heavy rains and winds...first time I have ever had to support any
beardless iris....but it is worth it.
RASPBERRY GEM (Anna Mae Miller 1988) - Always my favorite because of the
wonderful color...a real stand-out near a low stone wall. It is a double
(6 falls)
WHITE PARACHUTE (McEwen 1981) - Another single (3 falls) and I am liking
it better every year...blooms over a long period and far outshines
LITTLE SNOWMAN in my estimation (of which I have 3 clumps).
LASTING PLEASURE (Ackerman 1985) - Interesting double which was a first
bloomer for me and was taller than most JIs in my garden (excepting
BELLENDER BLUE : I didn't measure it. Lovely coloring with purple-violet
fading to almost red-violet after a few days (blooms last 4 or 5 days
here, typically). There is a lot of white along the margins and in the
flower itself.
PINK DACE (Copeland 1988) - A 6-fall Tet. which has a good bloom habit.
Looks almost white but is a sanded pink...love it.
DIRIGO DEBUTANTE (White 1994) - new to me this year so I pay special
attention to the newbies. It was a single and very impressive with a
sanded violet over white look. It was sent to me in May and bloomed in
July (what a nice surprise). It was the first JI to bloom here although
it is registered as M-L so it won't be the first next year.
Except for DIRIGO DEBUTANTE and PINK DACE, all are still blooming along
with 'lesser' JIs. :)
Cheers,
Ellen
