Mark asks...

I shouldn't have fired off a facetious answer -- in actuality if you browse
a current listing of daylilys you will find that nearly all except
cultivars named for an individual [and even many of these, ie: Helen
Fischer/Helen Field Fischer] will be names found in the 1929,1939,1949 and
1959 AIS 'Check Lists'
AIS was one of the first plant societies to publish a plant name
registration book. {O.K.-- roses and a couple of others beat us}. Many iris
hybridizers and growers are, in their golden years, seduced away to
daylilys by that plant's carefree habits and good gardenability. These
hybridizers have lamented for years 'The old timers stole all the good
names!' When they shift to breeding and registering daylilys, the older
iris names are a cornucopia of really good names that can be freely used on
a daylily. Thence the overlap--> 'old iris name/new daylily name'
The dangers of making an in-joke! I should get in the habit of using smilies.
