Re: CULT: Slug Control

Thanks, Jeff, for this practical suggestion. I may try it next spring.
Actually -- and probably fortunately -- I am unaware of any serious damage
done to adult irises by slugs. But they can be death to seedlings. I plant
my seeds in aluminum loaf pans and set them out in a frame covered by
chicken wire to freeze and germinate over the winter. This spring, I
noticed a sudden malady affecting the seedlings when they were 2-3 inches
tall. I lifted each loaf pan and found slugs under about every fourth one.
After dispatching the slugs, I established an epsom salt perimeter around
the loaf pans, and re-established it after every rain -- we had a lot of
rain this spring. Still, the slugs appeared and were dispatched on the
order of about every 3 days. I then went off to Norfolk for the better part
of three days for our regional iris convention. When I returned, some of
the seedlings had been devastated. I lost almost entire lots of crosses of
certain miniature dwarfs. They seemed to be most vulnerable. There were
now slugs under almost every loaf pan. They were obviously living close to
the food source. I solved the problem by removing the loaf pans from the
frame and placing them on a patio table covered with plastic. Since then,
the only problem has been a cutworm, and he has damaged only one seedling.
I am now transplanting them all -- about 450. Hopefully, the slugs will not
invade the new seedling beds. But if they do, I'll be reaching for the
ammonium sulfate.
