Hello, eboyle:
We've talked about this before - but it certainly is a timely subject. I
deadhead my irises as each bloom begins to collapse, cutting back the
branches along the way. When the last flower is done, I carefully reach into
the fans and snap off the bloomstalk at the rhizome. This can generally be
accomplished using your thumb for leverage - but not always.
If the stalk is uncooperative, I can sometimes achieve success by cutting it
off at about 3 inches and THEN doing the snap thing. If it will not snap,
then we try to cut off as cleanly as possible so as not to invite rot.
Siberian bloomstalks can be cut off at any height that pleases you.
