Back in the sixties or early seventies somebody wrote an
article for the AIS Bulletin saying that the 'line of demarcation' for
growing bearded iris was Interstate Highway 20 and south of that
line. Bearded irises were 'iffy' in these areas.

That line was drawn across Texas following I-20 westward. I
lived south of that line until I-20 was rerouted. Whoever wrote that
article didn't go to Texas in April or read any literature about iris
societies there. If they had, they would have been amazed at the
irises that thrived in the Austin-Temple-Waco areas and the iris
activities in that area as far south as New Braunfels. I think the
general rule of thumb now is that bearded irises will not thrive within
80 to 100 miles of the Gulf without out special care. When my
mail order business was more active, I used to have repeat orders
from Houston, TX, south Alabama and Georgia. Of course, south
Louisiana and Florida are generally considered non-bearded
growing areas. Mark Cook reports bloom on WINTERLAND, and
that is about all in the bearded department.
