I've seen summers in Kentucky when the sun can suck all the green from an
iris left to cure in the sun, turning it white in a very short time. Less
than a day. This will also happen to a trasplanted iris with no shade.
Nearly anything will work to shade them, including empty flower pots, but
it's best not to dig in these conditions.

But to the question of coating in chemicals, air drying until the surface
forms a skin is usually enough. It's better to use a sharp knife to
seperate/divide. Broken and jagged areas leave more surface for disease, etc.
