While listening to classical music is my first choice, on occasion I
wipe the dust off the case of my Gibson J45 big bass guitar and kerplunk
along as I sing shouting blues and sentimental country & western
ballads, often of my own composition with lyrics not fit for genteel
ears.
There, my dirty little secret is out.
Any satirist who is not firmly based in country music is missing the
mother lode of material. One local band of good moral character is
working up their rendition of one of my songs, "You're Pre-approved, or
the Visa/MasterCharge Blues".
I don't know if this qualifies as being a musician rather than a writer
who loves to sing. Friends have for years kept me away from karioke
bars, the only exception being a resort in the mountains on the
China-Manchurian border where they shooed us out of the dining room
early so they could set up the karioke for the Chinese kids on school
trips there.
It turned out the only song in English they had was Red River Valley,
which I did in concert with a bunch of British Birders who were so bad
that this event is known in the west as The Night Gene Autrey Died.
There are many interesting irises growing in China, which I did not
recognize and was not able to smuggle out. I later bought the book on
Chinese irises and recognized nothing. I mention this only because it is
good, even in OT CHAT, to not stray too far from iris topics.
