HYB:Potting soil

Linda mentioned problems with plant pacs from Wal-Mart. I have no knowledge
of these, but did have an experience with bagged potting soil which I will
pass along, since seed planting season is in the future for many of us.

Normally, I buy a quality potting soil from one of the local nurseries for my
seedlings. One year I ran out about halfway thru planting and, since I'd
already over extended my budget, I bought several bags of cheap ps from
Kmart. I lined out all 120 six inch pots (it was a very prolific year), and
marked the soil change in my records.

The next spring, all pots burst forth with life (actually it was the best
germination I've had) and things went great, until the seedlings all reached
just under 2 inches in height. Then, the last set of pots stopped growing
completely. None died. When I realized what had happened, I started
watering the pots vigorously in an attempt to flush out the growth
retardants, but it still took an entire year before they grew any. Why would
any company put growth retardant in potting soil? Poor soil collection?

No more Mart soil for MY little babies.
