Yes, that is my theory on goosenecking in general, bearded or beardless. You
get some combination of heat and moisture and things go rubbery. Sometimes
appears with other kinds of plants in the garden at the same time, like my
Regale lilies this year, so I figure it has to be something like that.
The names of some of the JIs are so wonderful. One of my favorite names is
the historic LIGHT IN THE OPAL.
