We grow and sell (guessing) 60-80 "black" bearded irises. We do not
find them any different to grow than any other color class. If there was
color we find harder to grow I would say it was pink because they seem
to be a bit more tender. Just being curious, why do you consider blacks
tricky? The only thing about blacks (and all darks) is the tendency for
the blooms to burn in the sun.
On the other hand, we have lost i. chrysographes several times. It
is about as black as an iris can get. But then we have very limited success
with the 40 chromosome siberians. DOTTED LINE does ok. And we have a
few 40chr. seedlings that seem to be handling the weather ok, but no bloom
yet.
