Actually, he would need to divide the plants so that an equal amount each
got the lantana juice w/detergent, lantana juice plain, detergent plain, and
nothing at all. He would then end up with results that could be categorized
like this:
100% no damage or little damage--the grasshopper simply passed him by, or
did not care for his plants at all this year.
75% no damage or little damage, and 25% lost. The lost would presumably be
the untreated group.
50% no damage or little damage. This would most likely be the lantana juice
with detergent and either the group with lantana juice plain, or the group
with detergent plain.
25% with little or no damage--This could be the group with the combo. the
plain juice, or the plain detergent. If it is either of the latter two, you
could draw the inference that either the mixture did not have enough of the
juice or detergent to be effective or that the mixture some how was made
ineffective by the combination of ingredients working against each other.
Depending on the amount of damage received by each group, even further
breakdowns could possibly be made, but I'll let you all come up with that
sort of thing.

You will obviously have to run a controlled study. Spray some with the
detergent and some without.
