When I say ALL the other PCNs I didn't mean it
literally, Dallas! (I wish.)
I've had chrysophylla, innominata, tenax,
dousglassiana, etc.... all in clay in sun. Oh, and of
course missouriensis. I do not know the sub-species on
the last; I got it from Forest Farm.
Most of these never established themselves... course
we give little supplemental moisture, except for the
driest portions of the year, like now.
Tenax was the only one of this set to bloom... and
then it died back... I have since been told this is
just it's natural cycle.
The others, with the exception of innominata, died. I
don't mean went dormant, I mean dead. But understand
this is heavy clay with lots of sun....
A second batch of PCNs, these mostly Douglassiana and
PCH (doug. x inno., generally,) were purchased and
planted in shallow clay mixed with loose gravel and
kept loose. They were then mulched with more gravel.
These were all in hig understory areas.... and every
one of them has increased in size and sent up bloom
their first year.
So you can see we have better luck with them in the
shade down here. Strange that your in LA did okay in
the sun... maybe they were CA bred PCHs? But I know we
are warmer down here than Puget Sound... they might
survive perfectly well up there in the sun... which of
course is a relative term where you are! <g>
Len got her missouriensis in the classic place it
grows in the wild; wash bottoms in a dry climate. No
doubt that's why they were so successful....
I knew there was an oddball of this species on Whidbey
Is., but I did not know a source... perhaps these
woudl've done better here.
