I found the best labels are from Eon Industries. They are metal markers . I 
use the swing type 10".  On the back side I write in Lead Pencil it always 
stays on even after 5 years. On the front I  use a paint pen that I get at an 
art supply store. That stays quite well. A permanet SHARPIE marker fades 
after a few months of sun. 
The shorter 10 inch length makes them unobtrusive.
