I work with the public in a number of areas dealing with
the county library system. It is amazing to interact
with people who do not read or cannot read or otherwise
comprehend the printed word yet visit the public libraries.
We are in the middle of the summer library program and
what is going on is printed in the newspapers and posted
on bulletin boards in each library. It is different for
the three libraries, yet it is clearly stated. Parents
drop off their children on the wrong day, wrong time
of day, or at the wrong library. They just plain don't read!
As a result, we have additional babysitting chores
in addition to the regular ones. (Oh, the stories I
could tell about parents dropping their children off
at the library while they went to work or to college classes, etc., etc.)
Not reading or not comprehending or ignoring the screen
occurs on iris-talk. Only the owner is to use the administrative
tag, but every time John posts and people reply,
they naturally hit the reply button so the administrative
tag gets used by a non-administrators. I know how anxious
you want John to read your response, but you need to
change the subject line.
New members just don't take the time to read the welcome page,
and they don't save it, especially when they want to unsubscribe.
It's all there.
Several years ago after quite a bit of discussion,
we voted to keep the tags for the sake of the archives.
I think that is a wise idea. Of course, some people
forgot to change the subject line when they should have (yours truly
included), but if we don't have them for searching
purposes, we won't be able to find anything anymore in the archives.
Print out the welcome page with the tags if you cannot remember it
and keep it close to your computer.
Nobody's perfect, but when you sign up, you need to know what
you are getting into and what is expected.
