John, being owner/moderator of this list, is the one who decides who would/should assist
in the moderator duties. That is the way Yahoogroups is sent up to work and it makes
perfect sense (to me).
As far as who he might/might not select is his prerogative As far as it being too much of
a burden, that is also his prerogative to weigh. With an auto-mailing list like
Yahoogroups we are not talking about splitting the atom, after all. :-) 'They' take care
of the undeliverables or bounced-back messages as opposed to the old iris-l on Rt. 66
where Tom to deal with the return messages flooding his private e-mail.
Having said that, there 'are' duties that the moderator does perform and they increase
with the size of the list(s).
John knows the ins and outs of the lists he manages (and owns) and he also knows whom he
can call on and, above all, trust to oversee the lists. Moderators 'can' be empowered by
the owner/moderator to perform various functions as he/she sees fit.
The owner/moderator who sets up a Yahoogroups mailing list (chooses preferences, so to
speak) to reflect his/her individual tastes and involvement as to how the list should
run.
Speaking as a list owner, I would hate to have the lists I moderate have a
/self-appointed committee/ of three or four members to oversee my lists as a management
committee. But this may or may not be the view of other list owners. There are several
other Yahoogroups mailing list owners on iris-talk who can also speak to these points,
btw.
*Didn't Bobby Baxter (iris moose) suggest a scenario akin to this last year or is this a
case of deja vu on my part?
