Using the archives can be tricky, but if you persist, they can be very
helpful. Maybe the most important thing to remember is that sometimes
they aren't working right, so if you think you've followed the
directions and are using search words that 'should' turn up something,
contact John and/or Chris for help. Sometimes the index gets corrupted
(am I using the right words Chris?) and the search engine can't find the
posts. Chris wants to know when it's messed up so he can fix it.

search engine searches the entire message including the From and Subject
lines as well as the body text.>
There are a couple of ways to search for posts - one is using keywords
as John describes above. If you are trying to track down a particular
thread, sometimes this won't work because the word was misspelled in the
original post or humor was used (such as my 'burrito' rolls for seed
stratification). Sometimes I can get close to what I'm looking for
using the search engine, then note the date that the thread seemed to be
taking place, then go to the monthly index for each year. Or the author
index.
This index is where the subject lines are necessary to find your way
around. They are most helpful when the keywords I'm using aren't
finding the information I want.
If you try to find something in the archives & can't, post here, & maybe
one of us can help.
